Regina Crime Stoppers is breaking uncharted ground in ensuring we live in a safer and more responsible community – that’s the message from the organization’s record-breaking increase in the number of tips received in 2017.
The community based non-profit organization celebrated another record-setting year in 2017, receiving 1,192 tips, a 9.6 percent increase over 2016, and the most ever in the organization’s 33-year history.
“As a volunteer-based organization which depends on community partners from the Regina Police Service to the business community to the local media to be effective, we are gratified to see these results,” said Craig Perrault, Vice President of Regina Crime Stoppers.
“When we hear that investigators are receiving more tips and more credible leads in solving crimes, it sends a message to the public, as well as to potential criminals, that Regina is serious about reducing crime and building a safe community.”
In 2017, the 1,192 tips helped to clear 23 cases that resulted in 11 arrests, and $190,800 in stolen property and drugs recovered. Callers who provide tips which leads to the identity or arrest of individuals involved in a crime are eligible to receive cash rewards of up to $2,000.
Perrault said Regina Crime Stoppers delivered several effective initiatives in 2017, including enhancing its social media presence through launching a new Facebook page and partnering with Conexus Credit Union on the Leaders Creating Future Leaders initiative, a monthly event aimed at exposing at risk-children to community leaders.
He added that the volunteer organization also participates in several trade shows annually and works with local media to promote a Crime of the Week recreation.
“Our work to improve our visibility is complemented by our strong partnerships with Regina Police Services and the city,” said Perrault, noting that the City has again proclaimed January 2018 as International Crime Stoppers Month. “Making our city a vibrant, safe place for our neighbors and families requires the effort of everyone, and we are proud to have played a role again in 2017 in making that happen.”
